Glory Days of Thorny Burnet
Jamili's Prayer
Within the frame, the mother's longing for her missing son becomes palpable, an emotion that transcends time, echoing through millennia. This enduring ache, a constant across generations of mothers, finds a focal point in the ritual of the dice. Here, her cherished numbers become potent symbols of hope, a timeless language of yearning. Each roll is a silent plea, a desperate interpretation of fate, where a favorable outcome offers a fragile promise of her son's well-being – a hope as old as motherhood itself."
Soundtrack: "Mords" by Noël Akchoté.
Original Inky Dream
Because of the erosion of urban spaces in the face of unchecked corporate expansion, this video attempts to put light on the yearning for a true sense of home within a city, Beirut, that has been commodified and sold off to large corporations. This leaves the younger generation feeling disconnected and without a secure place within their own city. The imagery of them almost grasping the loose threads of the city underscores their precarious position and the feeling of being on the verge of losing their connection with her. It was presented in Beirut Metamorphose at 12 Drouot in Paris in March 2015.
This work weaves together the tactile experience of touching flour – within which viewers discover marbles and small fabric sacks filled with seeds – with the auditory journey of short stories sung and told by the baker – my mom. As bread rises and bakes, viewers are invited to contemplate tales of hunger, greed, and fairness, connecting the tangible process of handling the flour and its hidden elements with profound human themes.
